If you can't afford an original Rembrandt, do it yourself. Take your pick from some of these studies based on his masterly pen, brush and ink drawings.
I am presently studying Rembrandt's drawings. He is, of course, inimitable, but you can learn a lot by trying.
Van Gogh discovered his work early. In the mid-1870s, while he was in Paris, he saw the Rembrandts in the Louvre and again in 1877 the master's etchings in Amsterdam's Trippenhuis. He was not always able to see the originals however, and, like myself, had to study from reproductions in prints and photos. Van Gogh's interest in the 17th-century master remained with him throughout his life. If Rembrandt worked for Van Gogh, he might work for me too! Enjoy. |
